COUNCIL COMMITS TO TRAFFIC MANIFESTO

Following the recent County Council elections New Alresford Town Council has pledged its support for a raft of traffic management initiatives, which it hopes will be of considerable benefit to the town.  Working with Council Councillor Jackie Porter, the Town Council is keen to actively pursue the proposals on behalf of the community, in partnerhsip with the County Council.

The most important proposals relate to pedestrian safety and include tackling problems at The Soke bridge, Sun Lane railway bridge, West Street, acces to the Station car park and the provision of a new 'link' footpath from the new Perins footpath to Grange Road/Stratton Bates.

The proposals also include the provision of a mini-roundabout at the junction of West Street and Jacklyns Lane; a cycle path/disability route along the south side of The Avenue to the railway bridge and the funding of the West Street improvement under the Putting Pedestrians First initiative.

"These are all vital improvements relating to the safety of pedestrians and road users in the town,"said NATC Chairman Steve Middleton "and residents will be able to see these proposals coming to fruition over the next few years.  However more immediately we are asking for ongoing clearing and unblocking of road gullies throughout the town and we want to ensure that A31 road replacements use the quieter type of road surfacing."

"I have always supported the principle of Putting Pedestrians First," says County Councillor Jackie Poter "and I'm pleased that the Town Council has agreed a clear list of priorities."

"Things may not be so easy in the current economic climate but we are now agreed on what we are aiming to achieve.  It's a long list for one town but I have committed to a series of actions already.  Alresford will contrinue to thrive if the town is safe and 'people friendly' for residents and visitors alike," she said.
